Connect with a Spiritual Community
Jun 13, 2024Go where you can find your people. If unsure where that is, visit different environments and communities, such as churches, AA meetings, volunteer groups, or local meetups. In recovery, two minds are better than one. Shooting ideas off others is preferred to build a compassionate support system for your journey.
I did various things to build my community—some church and some recovery. Take what you like, leave the rest. Nothing will be perfect, and much of it is attitude, anyway. Some people show up to complain; don’t be that person. We have to show up with the right attitude. If we show up with a positive attitude, we’ll probably have a positive experience.
In my years of sobriety, I’ve seen many people relapse. There was a common theme to all of them: they were alone. Isolating is dangerous; we must replace old environments with new ones. The only way to do that is to find people who suit your recovery and personality - it takes trial and error. Sure, it’s not fun being new somewhere or going to someone unfamiliar, but what I’ve learned in recovery is to do the uncomfortable things.
Try to attend a spiritual gathering or community event. Surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals can strengthen your belief. Where could you find people who have what you want?
