How To Embrace Today

one day at a time Jul 19, 2024

Embrace the moment by looking around and realizing what you’re grateful for. I see birds flying, squirrels darting across the yard, and a warm fireplace - I’m thankful for these things. Now, if I were in my feelings about something, not focusing on the current moment, I wouldn’t see any beautiful things right before me. Gratitude shifts focus from what’s missing to what is already present and valuable.

Another fundamental approach is to fully engage in whatever you are doing - focus on the task, whether it's a work project, a hobby, or a daily chore. By immersing yourself in the present activity, you reduce the space for dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. This practice of being 'in the moment' allows for a deeper appreciation of the now.

For instance, I, Justin McClure, am writing this book—these daily posts—requiring focus and discipline. Authentic living isn’t extravagant travel or participating in a grand event; it’s the simple things. Each moment is precious; if you don’t think so, try missing one.

Remember to consider the power of setting daily goals. They don't have to be monumental; they can be as simple as completing a task, engaging in a hobby, or having a meaningful conversation. These small victories contribute to a sense of accomplishment and encourage a focus on the present, fostering personal growth and sobriety.

Embracing today is about complete acceptance with all its ups and downs. It’s about understanding that each individual's path to recovery is unique and that every sober day is a significant step. It doesn’t mean ignoring the past or future but acknowledging that the only moment you can genuinely influence is now.

Every day is a new opportunity for growth and sobriety. Embrace it fully.
