How To Find A Higher Power

spirituality Jul 21, 2024

I get if you have an issue with the “higher power” concept. But It’s necessary to have a higher power to understand our place in the universe: we aren’t almighty, and the world doesn’t revolve around us. Much of my addiction was me, me, me! But in recovery, we learn otherwise.

Here's how someone who has issues with the traditional concept of God can choose a higher power of their own:

  1. Reframe the Concept: A higher power can symbolize essential principles or values. It could be something abstract like "hope," "love," "nature," or even "community." The key is finding something that resonates with your values.
  2. Personal Values: Identify principles to guide your recovery. These could include honesty, humility, compassion, or other values aligning with recovery. These values can serve as a higher power.
  3. Nature and Universe: Many people find solace and inspiration in nature. Its vastness and beauty can be a source of spiritual connection. You can view the natural world as your higher power, finding inspiration and a sense of humility in its presence.
  4. Human Connection: For some, the higher power can be their fellow humans' collective strength and support. The sense of community and the shared experience in recovery can be a powerful source of guidance.
  5. Mindfulness and Meditation: Practices like mindfulness and meditation can help individuals connect with a more profound sense of self and spirituality without needing a traditional higher power.

Find a source of inspiration that works for you. The higher power is a tool to help you stay grounded, connected, and motivated in recovery. Most importantly, it fosters positive change and growth in our lives.
