Read and Reflect
Sep 23, 2024Spend time reading and reflecting on inspirational stories.
People don’t read much anymore, which is a shame. Between weighty responsibilities, digital devices, and the accessibility of social media, nobody wants to pick up a book. Reading is not just a form of entertainment; it's a powerful tool for inspiration. When you dive into a book, especially an inspirational one, you're not just flipping through pages – you're embarking on a journey that can profoundly shape your perspective.
Early in my sobriety, I read a lot of literature on self-help and inspirational biographies. My sponsor assigned reading assignments each week, which I was to complete for an in-person discussion. Some of the material didn’t excite me, but I was better off reading it; I did what I was told.
Every story, every biography, every self-help book is packed with lessons, experiences, and insights. As you read about the struggles and triumphs of others, you start to see your challenges and aspirations in a new light. It's like having a heart-to-heart with the author or the characters, learning from their journeys, and applying lessons to your life.
Moreover, reading and reflecting instill a sense of calm and mindfulness. It's a momentary escape that allows you to return to your world refreshed and often with new insights. Whether it's a rags-to-riches story, a tale of adventure and courage, or a deep dive into the lives of great personalities, every book has the potential to light a spark. It's like having an endless reservoir of mentors and friends in the form of books, always there to guide, inspire, and motivate you toward your goals.
