Reflect on Impulsivity

addictive behaviors impulsive urges May 19, 2024

Alcohol and substance abuse can increase impulsivity, which is dangerous not only for the addicted but for those around us as well. There are phases of addiction led by impulsive behaviors, causing people to act out on urges, which is a significant cause for addictive behaviors.

Impulsivity in addiction means lying, stealing, and neglecting responsibilities without thinking or considering who you’re hurting.  In sobriety, we need to make better choices than before. If not, we risk ruining our relationships because impulsive behaviors can put a strain on those we love, which leads to conflict.

An impulsive thought with little consequences is buying something suddenly that’s unnecessary. However, with addiction, the stakes have also increased. When dopamine kicks in, and your brain demands to be satiated, that’s when impulsive behaviors can be dangerous.

Addressing impulsivity helps to create a more stable, controlled, and mindful approach, significantly aiding those in recovery from addiction. It involves developing skills and strategies that support sobriety and enhance overall decision-making.

What impulsive tendencies do you have that could be considered unhealthy?
