Reflection on Personal Values

Reflect on core values. Aligning actions with values leads to a more authentic life.

Sometimes, sobriety can be overwhelming. We don’t know which way to go or what to believe. Having a plan is having a personal GPS to guide you. We must know what turns to make, what forks to avoid, and the safest routes.

Before I got sober, I didn’t have core values. I was lost and bewildered. I seemed to stumble through life like a sad cow—just meandering without purpose. It feels painful, but we must be in despair to escape it. To appreciate the view from the mountaintop, we must spend time in the valley.

When I was drunk and using, my only concern was my next fix and finding companionship to feed my insecurities. It wasn’t until I got sober that I developed a value system. It’s not that we need to try and find principles; as we live a healthier life, the principles find us. It’s incredible how patience, meditation, and time bring in the beliefs without thinking about them.

You can start to think about your values by asking questions like,

“What’s important to me?”

“What makes me fulfilled?”

Are your actions reflecting those values? Make small changes because things don’t happen overnight. Over time, aligning yourself with your values and principles will bring peace, purpose, and stable sobriety.
